Insulation sales go through the roof

South East insulation sales have gone through the roof this week since new Federal Government insulation assistance grants to homeowners came into effect.

An earlier boom occurred in February when $1600 insulation grants were announced, allowing homeowners to take advantage of the offer before it came into effect on July 1.

“Our phones have been ringing off the hook since yesterday and we have already booked 30 more jobs,” roof insulator MG Plasterers managing director Matt Patzel told The Border Watch.

“We have already employed two more full-time people to do the work and will have to employ two more full-time workers in the next few weeks.

“I am a great believer in supporting local businesses, so this is fantastic for the town.”

Between February 3 and June 30, homeowners had to pay upfront to have insulation installed and then claim reimbursement from the government, but since yesterday homeowners did not need to pay upfront as businesses claim payment directly from the Commonwealth.

Roof insulation business Gaylard Plaster and Insulation managing director Henry Gaylard said homeowners who could not afford to pay upfront before yesterday were now starting to take advantage of the grants.

“I think many people have held back until now because they don’t have to pay up front any more,” he said.

Mr Gaylard said he employed three more workers to keep up with the demand and he would have to employ more workers in the next two weeks.

“The demand has caused a shortage of supply of materials in the past few weeks as manufacturers could not keep up, but that has all been sorted and we are ready to do more installations,” he said.

It costs between $1200 and $1300 to insulate a three to four bedroom home and Mr Gaylard said homeowners would be foolish not to take advantage of the $1600 grants.

The grants are part of the Federal Government’s energy efficient homes package, which runs until December 31, 2011.
